- ~~5AMIGA 1400, FACT OR FANTASY ?
-
- A recent source in Commodore was heard discussing the new Amiga 1400,
- which is not surprisingly based on the Amiga 1200. This time the 68020
- chip will run between 25Mhz and 28Mhz, compared with 14Mhz on the A1200.
- The only other major differences are the fact that it will come with a
- 80Mb hard drive as standard, as well as a high density drive, which is
- the same one that comes with the Amiga 4000. Also a CD-ROM/5.25" drive
- port will be included as well as a massive 4Mb Ram. The machine will come
- as a seperate keyboard and computer unit, again like the 4000. But most
- amazingly this machine will only cost about £100 more than a A1200 with a
- similar setup.
-
- ~~6DSP SOUND CHIPS AHOY!
-
- Commodore has confirmed that they will be including 32-Bit DSP sound
- chips in the next generation of Amigas. But what we want to know is when
- are they going to include them in the 1200 ?
-
- ~~5DIGITAL DISK GOES EMAIL!
-
- As from next issue, or the 5th issue at the latest, we will have an Email
- contact address (well actually four contact addresses!) where you can
- contact any of the Digital Disk staff directly with any questions, ideas,
- etc.
-
- ~~6CD-32 NOW ON THE STREETS
-
- Ok so it isn't exactly 'hot' news, but I just thought I'd mention that
- the new Amiga CD-32 console is now available, offering the same
- capabilities of a 1200 with the added bonus of a CD player built in, as
- well as a new chip making 3D graphics run faster than ever before (who
- needs a SNES with the Super FX chip anymore ?!).

- ~~4---NEWS COMMENT---
-
- With the news and various launches the last year of yet more new Amigas,
- I have started to wonder when things are eventually going to settle down.
- I don't know about other people, but I for one am not going to rush out
- and buy a new Amiga, when a new one might be just around the corner
- offering slightly better specifications for more or less the same price.
- Also then to find out that the one I just bought gets slashed in price a'
- la A600.
-
- The launch of the 4000 was an important step for Commodore, providing
- high powered machines for fairly reasonable prices, and the ability to
- change the 'motherboard' of an 030 machine to a 040 machine was in my
- opinion an excellent idea. This is partly the reason why PC's do so well
- I reckon because you can nearly always upgrade your machine as new
- technology and better processors arrive. I hope this filters down to the
- base machines. The 1400 looks as though it could feel that gap, if they
- do release such a machine, they should call it a 4000/020, put it in a
- similar box, and then watch the punters rush out and buy it. Because
- personally I could see such a machine become highly successful.
-
- By all means they should keep the A1200 as their base machine, but for
- users who want more expandibility but can't afford the 4000/030 they
- could go for the 4000/020 instead, deterring potential customers from
- being wooed to a cheap 386 PC instead.
-
- The CD drive should be released for all the new machines, and the A600 so
- that the maximum amount of Amiga users can use the CD media, thus
- assuring that it takes off in a big way. With the CD-32 knocking the
- socks off the Sega/Nintendo consoles.
-
- So please Commodore listen to logic and don't just release Amiga after
- Amiga without giving considerable thought to the structure and
- expandibility of the Amiga range of computers. David [Shadow-dc1am1]

- ~~4Atari ST/Falcon News and Rumours
-
- ~~5THE FALCON HAS ARRIVED!!!~
-
- Finally the beasty is here. I went into my local computer shop and
- there it was on the shelf, and as my brother is working there for a couple
- of weeks, we have had the chance of playing on one. So my brother
- approached the machine armed with a handfull of disks of downloaded
- software from various archives.
-
- The only problem that was experienced was that 90% of the software
- needed more then the machines 1 meg of memory, and some of the software
- needed the hard drive, which this model didn't have.
-
- One program that did work was called Fracplay. This little gem of a
- proggie plays protracker music at 50Khz, and converts the samples to 16
- bit. The result is crystal clear stereo and a lot of gutted A...a owners.
-
- Another program that behaved itself was called FracDsp, this runs on
- ST's and Falcons, and plots a Mandelbrot on the desktop in med res. On a
- standard St it takes about 80 secs to generate one, on the Falcon with
- only the 030 running, it took about 25 secs, with the DSP running as well,
- it took 8 secs! Proof that the DSP isn't just for sound!!!
-
- A hard drive was ordered and was being placed into the machine, but
- there was a fault with it and the Falcon refused to recognise it, so
- another was found. These hard drives are about the same size as a floppy
- disk and about 4 disks thick.
-
- As soon as the other 3 megs are fitted and the hard drive plonked in,
- then I will report the results of the other programs.
-
- A 68881/2 co-processor can be found for about (Flicks through
- catalogue :-) ) um....... 25 to 50 quid (there are so many different
- variations here).
-
- Right O! that'll do for the mo! Paul [Pioneer-ph1st1]
